Procurement Room: “Bertrand Touzet, Procurement as a driver of decarbonization across the entire company”
“Bringing carbon accounting up to the same level as financial accounting: we have less than 10 years to do it.”
Decarbonizing Procurement is a deep transformation that will redefine the buyer-supplier relationship for the next ten years. Is the Procurement function ready to be the driving force behind it?
In this 11th episode of Procurement Room, the MeoTalk podcast, Hervé Legenvre welcomes Bertrand Touzet. He is Head of Environmental Transformation for Procurement at Eiffage and co-author of the white paper “Decarbonizing Our Procurement,” published by the CNA (Conseil National des Achats / French National Procurement Council).
In 9 years at Eiffage, Bertrand Touzet has built an operational response to an issue that many companies still treat as a regulatory constraint. In this episode, he shares in particular:
- The white paper “Decarbonizing Our Procurement.” It is a collective undertaking involving around thirty practitioners, led under the auspices of the CNA alongside Schneider, Michelin, Crédit Agricole, L’Oréal, and Air Liquide, and designed by buyers, for buyers.
- The unique challenges of construction. The sector is responsible for 21% of greenhouse gas emissions linked to buildings, and each project remains a prototype. At Eiffage, concrete, steel, and bitumen alone account for 40% of emissions. Decarbonizing therefore starts with data: life cycle assessment and the INIES database.
- BlueOn, Eiffage’s internal marketplace since 2022. There, carbon footprint is an entry requirement for suppliers, not just one more criterion. Launched with 4 suppliers and 400 references, BlueOn now has more than 110 suppliers for 100,000 references. 280 suppliers have been approached, with no refusals.
- The circular economy, the next pivot of the Procurement function. Several factors are driving it: the growing scarcity of resources, the rise of AGEC and CSRD regulations, and the new criteria in public procurement. Bertrand Touzet shares concrete experiments carried out with Legrand and Nexans.
- Reverse sourcing. Tomorrow, what we find in our buildings may become the raw material for our suppliers, a reversal that the Procurement function must anticipate right now.
- His advice to young buyers: curiosity, cross-functionality, and resilience.
